Aaron Rai Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Battle Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off following a rollercoaster last day of competition.
The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie from just over eight feet to clinch the victory, repeating his only previous tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff victory against Fleetwood.
Final Round Excitement
Rai entered the last day with a one-shot advantage over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood moved a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final green.
Play-Off Climax
That led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in winnings.

To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” said Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to describe at the moment how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Other Performances
The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to make up, finishing one shot behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 closing round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
The Danish golfer carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of leading the standings were hit by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
