Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Meloni to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause
Relinquishing unwanted gifts can be viewed as a little discourteous – except if it's done the right way.
A Charitable Sale
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 gifts given to her by foreign dignitaries while abroad. The eclectic collection could include objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
These items, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. They will be auctioned off via competitive bidding by a Italian art dealer. The specific date remains to be announced, although the intention is to hold the auction by year's end, with the revenue benefiting various charities.
Storage Room Treasures
The items are said to be kept in a secure area on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. Sources state that Meloni furthermore intending to auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been sitting unused over a long period.
The full gift list has not yet been officially released, but some insight were revealed earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was presented in parliament. The question focused on whether a legal value limit was being respected. By law, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.
A Global Array of Gifts
Notable gifts feature:
- A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
- A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
- Artworks from Moldova.
- Various other items including makeup, a board, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the strangest gifts were the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.
Diplomatic Context
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from her allies, with winning over global statesmen and making Italy as a key protagonist on the global scene once again.
This unique auction highlights a distinct method to manage the state presents that are collected during a leader's tenure.
