Blast Takes Three Law Enforcement Officers During Eviction Procedure in the Verona Area
Three police officers were killed and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in what appears to be deliberate detonation from gas at a country home in Italy's north.
How It Happened
The detonation occurred as police and firefighters approached the house near Verona to execute an removal notice for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
The three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.
Investigation Developments
A man and a woman were taken into custody at the site and a third person who escaped following the incident was located shortly later. All three have been admitted to the hospital.
The detonation could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the scene revealed the structure reduced to a pile of rubble.
“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the previous occasions.
Property Situation
The head of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the residence was facing an court order due to debts accrued by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been sent to engage the siblings who had secured themselves into the property. When the officers reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the residents triggered the explosion.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Commander Papagno informed reporters.
A gas canister had been set off, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he said.
Molotov cocktails were also located at the site, the interior minister stated.
Impact Assessment
Those injured by the blast included 11 other members of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.
The official believed the detonation had happened on a story above the doorway and told journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the explosion, he revealed personnel had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the propane tanks being activated”.
Neighbor Statements
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants stated to reporters, adding that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
