Emma Coates Exits England Under-23s Post to Take Helm at National Women's Soccer League's Bay FC
Embarking on a fresh professional challenge, the former England youth boss has stepped down from the England WU23 national team to assume the role of head coach for National Womenâs Soccer League franchise Bay FC.
A New Chapter
She takes over from Albertin Montoya, who was at the helm of the California club during its first two seasons in the top-flight American league. Montoya announced in September his intention to resign at the conclusion of the 2025 campaign, a season which saw Bay FC finish second-bottom in the 14-team standings.
âI have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the FA,â remarked Coates. âIt has been instrumental in my development both in my career and as an individual. I am now prepared and eager to test my abilities in a fresh challenge.â
Proven Developer
Since taking charge in 2023, Coates guided the England U23s through fixtures including a narrow win over Norway in the continental competition and a 4-2 friendly defeat to the United States. Making the move alongside her to America is her right-hand woman, Gemma Davies, a former Aston Villa manager in the English top division.
The club's chief executive, a former FA womenâs technical director, spoke highly of Coates's credentials: âShe is both an outstanding tactician, but she also has a strong record of nurturing talent to thrive domestically and internationally.â
âCoates excels at leading of squads and building ethos and has the tactical philosophy we were looking for,â she continued.
Club Context
The club had a rollercoaster start to its NWSL existence, securing a playoff spot and losing in the playoffs in its debut season before facing difficulties to a 13th-place finish in 2025.
Gavin Step, Gavin Step, offered thanks to the departing duo: âWe thank Emma and Gemma for their time with us and wish them all the best with their venture abroad. They have played a pivotal part in strengthening the pathway between the young Lionesses and the first team.â
âTogether, they have directly shaped the development of many young players who have gone on to become senior Lionesses,â he added.
Pathway Success
Since taking over Mo Marley in 2023, Coates has overseen the promotion of multiple players to the national team, including playmaker Lucia Kendallâwho netted her first Lionesses goalâand attackers Michelle Agyemang and Aggie Beever-Jones.
An extensive process for new U23 coaching staff is now underway, as the FA looks to continue the progress of the youth national team in the future.
