European Cup Action Tonight: Manchester City v Bayer Leverkusen & More

Greetings to another night of electrifying European Cup football. Nine fixtures are set for tonight, including three English teams in action. Chelsea face Barça in the key match of the evening, whilst The Magpies visit the French side and Manchester City welcome Leverkusen.

Group Rankings

It's the halfway point of the league stage, meaning the standings is beginning to form. All six British teams are currently in the upper twelve, but there are only 2 points between 5th and sixteenth place, thus there's a hint of snakes and ladders about the whole thing. Everything is to play for.

This Evening's Games

  • Benfica lead Ajax 1-0 (5.45pm)
  • Galatasaray 0-0 Union SG (17:45)

Past Meetings

The sole past encounter between Marseille and Newcastle was the Uefa Cup semi-final of 2004, claimed by an emerging superstar from Ivory Coast. Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen have not faced each other previously. Chelsea and Barcelona have some past encounters.

Initial Game Reports

Only a single goal during the opening period of the early fixtures. Samuel Dahl's sixth-minute goal has given Benfica under Mourinho a one-nil advantage at Ajax.

Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille

Even though Newcastle traveled to the French south fresh from their confidence-boosting two-one home English top-flight win over Manchester City on the weekend, and having beaten Union Saint-Gilloise, the Portuguese side and Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League, their only away victory since early April came in the Belgian capital at Union Saint-Gilloise.

Not that Eddie Howe was overly keen to discuss the mental side of this travel sickness. “The European Cup is different to domestic games,” said the coach, whose side are sixth in the Champions League standings, with 9 points from a available twelve and automatic progression to the knockout phase nearly secured. “I don’t know if you can compare them.”

A dedicated live feed is available for Barcelona vs Chelsea. Murray, the minute-by-minute equivalent of Diego Maradona is on duty for that.
