Hamilton Island, one of the Popular Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Private Equity Firm.
An iconic resort island situated on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to continue the vision and dedication that the family owners has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard regulatory approvals.
The family released a statement noting they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the area is built upon, featuring a substantial range of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.

The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
