One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is departing from the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

Summers commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have contributed, excited about the potential of the organization, and look forward observing their development".

The former Harvard president, who previously headed the prestigious university, announced on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his association with the convicted sex offender.

The recently released messages revealed that Summers communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected human trafficking of underage individuals.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it understood the economist's determination to resign.

After the correspondence were made available with the wider community, the former official expressed he took "complete accountability for my misguided choice to continue communicating with the financier".

He further stated that he hoped "to rebuild trust and repair bonds with the persons nearest to me".

Career Background

The economist occupied high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He headed the institution from five years and is still a professor there. When stating his step-down from public commitments earlier on Monday, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Additional Consequences

Following the economist's declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank in DC where the professor was a prominent member, confirmed that Summers was no longer connected with the institution.
