The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
